Cautious Green List set to hit UK economy by £19bn this summer

Today, the All Party-Parliamentary Group for the Future of Aviation has released projections that show that the UK economy faces a £19bn hit as a result of the limited number of countries placed on the green list last week.

Across the vital summer months of June, July and August research shows outbound travel was responsible for £11.7bn and inbound travel was responsible £8.5bn.   As a result of the limited number of countries on the green list projections show that this is expected to fall to just £1.1 billion, a collapse of over £19billion.

The figures are likely to be even lower as a result of current restrictions placed on passengers from the UK to nations such as Australia and New Zealand which will prevent travel at any scale.

Commenting Henry Smith MP, Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Future of Aviation said:

“Whilst the reopening of international travel was a small step in the right direction, the incredibly limited green list countries risks making it another false dawn for our aviation, travel and tourism industries.

“These figures highlight that without a safe and fuller restart of international travel our economic recovery will have its brakes on and many businesses that have ran on empty will be left in a desperate battle for survival.

“It is vital that the Government use the first review point to bring forward a fuller list of safe green list countries that allows for our aviation, travel and tourism industries to play their full role in our much-needed economic recovery from the damaging impacts of the pandemic.

“Getting this right is about more than simply summer holidays, supporting our aviation industry is an economic imperative which must not be forgotten.”
